The results of this study have demonstrated that social presence in online learning classes is assumed to contribute towards the overall quality of online learning as well as the online learning experience.

I decided to carry forward the same project in the capstone course HMCD 6304: Conducting Research in Instructional Design and Technology; nevertheless, I refined my focus and carried out research on the need for social presence in online learning. The research findings are significant for the university where I work as I primarily conducted this study on the same university. I intend to sensitize online tutors about the need, role and importance of social presence and arrange training for them so they get well versed in facilitating social presence to the online students of the university. This became possible due to the in-depth readings and side-by-side discourse analyses on those readings with my course mates and facilitators on our course blog. These analyses were based on our course book, The World is Open, which was authored by Professor Curtis J. Bonk’s and was rated as the top ten books of the last decade on instructional technologies. One of the tasks of this course was to synthesize any chapter of this award winning book and present it to the rest of the class for discussion. I chose the chapter ‘Collaborate or Die’ and synthesized it in the form of a power point presentation. Please see this presentation here:
The workshop went very successful and the school principals and administrators went off accomplished and with a thorough understanding of their respective school problems and their causes. My website that I developed in this course was about the profile of some of the professors that have developed courses for the Virtual University of Pakistan (my current workplace). Moreover, I have been trained to devise ways to curb the potential problems that may come up in the online assessment paradigm. Also, I have realized the significant difference between summative and formative assessment and the value of the later. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process however, online assessment is a sensitive issue as accrediting bodies as well as students and potential employers, which are an important stakeholder, all over the world and particularly in Pakistan are concerned about the online assessment methods. In a way, a sound online assessment method would help garner the trust and acceptability of online learning among these stakeholders. There is growing trend towards online assessment in Pakistan as this research paper reflects. I further realized that the way to prosperity in today’s competitive world is to make learning and knowledge creation the core businesses of an organization. Knowledge and intellectual capital yield long-term competitive advantage and thus should be harnessed. It is essentially this course that enabled me to analyse which learning theories are primarily employed in Pakistan education system. It is my understanding that in Pakistan, we should move from cognitivism to social constructivism, as a first step and make use of the various readily available online learning support tools to make the online learning more effective. In this course we learnt together about various online learning support tools and resources and their underlying learning theories. This was a discussion forum exercise, where all the members chose an example of a tool or resource that supports learning. This set the ground for the other two research related courses in the programme and I equipped myself with the essential knowledge and skills to locate, cite and address essential parts of a research article. I also learnt to design and develop an online survey through the software, surveymonkey.com, which I used later in my capstone research project to collect data. The artifact in the HMCD 6304 course displays this skill. Additionally, I got familiar with the research that has been, and continues to be, carried out in the field of instructional design and technology. I also learnt to locate emerging tools and technologies that are being used or have the potential to be used in online instruction. In this regard, I located a research article on massive multiplayer online role-playing games and discussed it thoroughly. This discussion is presented here.

I learnt about the generic ADDIE model as well as about a number of specific ID models in the field. I can now describe, compare and contrast these different models. Also, I got a thorough understanding of the Analysis Phase which is the first step in the ADDIE model. This artifact that I have chosen to display here demonstrates how I conducted a thorough ‘analysis’ of a given situation and applied the key principles and components of the analysis phase. I chose to respond to this assignment by taking a hypothetical situation created around the given problem. Then I tried to carry out the solution in detailed steps so as to analyze the problem in depth and to later identify the plausible implications of the problem and suggest solutions to mitigate the problem. By analyzing each component of the problem separately, I could clearly see the root cause of the problem. I believe the best approach to tackle a problem is to analyze it completely, from all angles and get to the root of the problem. Then address it at the root level. This activity has refined my analytical skills. This is the first time that I have formally applied these skills in an instructional setting. I believe I can apply the analytical skills in various other Instructional Environments by following the steps that I applied in this particular assignment.

While synthesizing the given chapter, I related the key principles of the instructional design phase with two actual instances of design phase in an instructional setting that I had come across earlier. I analyzed those two instances in the light of the key principles of instructional design that had been stated in the chapter. By choosing actual instances regarding the design phase, I was able to see what happens in the design phase, what are the things that have to be considered and kept in mind while designing an instructional instance. Through this assignment I learnt that while designing one should have a clear understanding of the needs, requirements, goal and mission of the undertaking. I also learnt that it is vital to take into consideration, during the design phase, the readiness of the audience, environment and the organization about the idea that one wants to implement.

I am now trained and adept in applying the ADDIE model to any learning situation.
